The Healing Power of Poetry

7/27/2019

Hola,

When was the last time you read a poem? I read a couple this past week because I needed to connect with voices that speak about the beauty and strength of a woman. I found comfort in the work of Luis Llorens Torres and Julia de Burgos. This should not be surprising as there is extensive research that points to the healing power of writing and reading poetry. I am not suggesting you go to poetry therapy, but at least explore it as a non-digital technology to uplift your mood, when needed.

If you need a place to start, the website poets.org is a good resource to find poets and poems. I recommend the work of Richard Blanco, whom I had the pleasure to meet earlier this year, and Climbing Poetree, a duet that has also become a favorite.

Breaking the Ice

Hola,

Icebreakers are activities that help us get to know a group of people better and set a positive tone for collaboration or learning experience. These activities can be as simple as asking a question that ignites conversation. I find that when using this approach three characteristics should be present: know your audience, find something that serves as a connection between everyone and makes the question relevant to the context or purpose of work together.

Hola,

The concept of grounding refers to the act of engaging in those activities that help us connect to our physical body and channel our energy. Grounding techniques are many. Some examples are walking barefoot, exercising, and even eating whole foods. On today's post, I share my experience in discovering the activities that work best for me and invite you to come up with your own.

The Wind as a Connectivity Tool

Hola,

In the second edition of his book, The Manual of Bean Curd Boxing: Tai Chi and the Noble Art of Leaving Things Undone published in 2013, Paul Read talks about the concept of wind-bathing. Read, describes how the exposure of our body to the elements of nature can awaken our senses. On page 70, he states: "Once something as simple as wind-bathing causes this process to begin, our senses become more alert and ready to convert all moments, all circumstances, all surroundings into opportunities to improve our health and to deepen our connectivity to the world." Hence, my invitation to you today to tap into the connectivity tools that nature has given us.

Hola,

The most frequent question I get when presenting at conferences is what my opinion is about the substitution of world language classes for computing coding. On this vlog post, I share the answer.  Also, click the link below find the statement released by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign  Languages (ACTFL) in 2017 on this topic.

The Tech in Kundalini Yoga

Hola,

More than once, I have seen yoga practitioners refer to yoga as a technology for well being. Snatam Kaur does this cleverly in her book Original Light: the Morning Practice of Kundalini Yoga. The author highlights the specific tools embedded in the practice of Kundalini yoga, as a technology for healing. Click on the link below to learn more about her work.
